Tributes

In memory of Joseph Stalin Ashwood a proud Princewalean. He was a sports enthusiast who played cricket, table tennis, tennis, and golf. After completing his time at Prince of Wales School, he studied Mechanical Engineering in Russia. He returned to Sierra Leone and worked in the mines during the days of DIMINCO in Tongo Diamond Field. He relocated to Liberia for some time but because of the civil war in Liberia he had to return to Sierra Leone in the early 90s. He served at St. George’s Cathedral Church Freetown as a sidesman, then People’s Warden. He was a very religious man who loved God and his family. He passed away in January 2005, leaving lasting memories with all who knew him during his time on earth.

Stalin Theophilus Frazer, a proud alumnus of the Prince of Wales School, exemplified diligence, integrity, and commitment. At Prince of Wales, he excelled in academics and sports, captaining the school’s cricket team and representing Sierra Leone on the national team. A graduate of Fourah Bay College, Stalin earned a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and built a distinguished career with the Sierra Leone Brewery and Heineken, contributing significantly to engineering and leadership. Stalin was a staunch supporter of the school and would have been proud of the goals and aspirations of the Prince of Wales School Alumni Foundation (POWSAF). His legacy of perseverance, honor, and dedication inspires all who knew him. Stalin made a profound impact on everyone he encountered. He was a loyal friend with candid honesty, and we missed his presence immensely.

Dr. George Bernard Frazer, OR, JP, FRCOG, FWACS, was fondly known by his friends as GB. Hard work and generosity were his hallmarks. He was a proud Princewalean who was Senior Prefect & Head boy in 1954, and he would equally be proud of the Prince of Wales School Alumni Foundation’s (POWSAF) efforts today. His Love for sports was evident as he boxed for the Prince of Wales School and captained the soccer team. His character can best be described as premised on Hard Work, Integrity, and Respect. GB studied and worked in the United Kingdom, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Islands & Sierra Leone, where in 1987, he received the government award of the Order of the Rokel for distinguished public service in the medical field as Consultant Gynaecologist & Obstetrician. Fond memories of Daddy are etched with his firm belief in God’s hand in his life, love/devotion to his family, and clinical medicine alongside patient welfare. He was a private philanthropist who always sought the genuine welfare of mankind. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal saviour, and we are truly comforted by that knowledge.  Rest in Peace, GB.

The children of Colin Edward Jagne-Shaw (1977 deceased) support the POW Alumni Foundation in memory of our father, a member of the inaugural class of students at the Prince of Wales School in 1925. We believe his success in life as a father, family leader, humanitarian and former Chief Government Dispenser was inspired, in part, by his time spent as a student at the Prince of Wales School.

The loss of a father is a sorrow hard to bear. He was our hero. He was soft-spoken and could light up a room with his smile. A favorite of many who spent his life helping others; an Architect by profession, we loved accompanying him to inspect building sites. He lived an exemplary life that will always serve as our moral compass. Daddy taught us to love the Lord and never missed church. He was a proud Princewalean who always emphasized the importance of education. His love for family and fond memories of him will always be in our hearts.

Christian, commonly known as Uncle Chris, was soft-spoken with a sense of humor that usually caught people off guard because they didn’t expect it from someone who appeared to be so gentle. He was a proud Princewalean and often reminisced on his school days, including finishing his morning chores before walking barefoot to the Prince of Wales School. He was an Engineer and worked as a contractor for the US Air Force, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin. After retirement, he earned a bachelor’s in Theology and became a Biblical Counsellor. Christian positively impacted many lives as a counsellor. He is greatly missed. 

From his sister, Florence. Adopted daughter Fatima. Grand Children, Abigail, Rebecca and Abraham, and nieces and nephews.   

Gustavus, fondly known as “Gussy” or “Gus,” was devoted to and loved his family fervidly. Even more so, his Prince of Wales affiliation. He was a proud Princewalean and a member of the POW Alumni Association’s New York/New Jersey Chapter. He loved to laugh, and everyone who knew him described him as a gentleman with a kind and generous spirit. As an Architect, he had a passion for designing and left his mark by revitalizing neighborhoods. He also loved the Lord, evidenced by his active involvement at the Bridge Street AME Church in Brooklyn, where he led committees and served on several Boards.  Gustavus was very proud of his heritage and seized every opportunity to share stories and lessons with anyone who would listen. His life left an indelible mark on everyone he met. We remember and miss him immensely.

From his beloved wife, Verna – Sons Lade′ and Liland. Siblings; Claredine, Florette, and Clarence.

I am so proud to honor my dad, Mr. Walton Emeneseh Thomas Cummings, Local Preacher, Retired Accountant General at The General Post Office & Justice of Peace—I miss him dearly. He was a proud Princewalean. My earliest memory of his love for POW was Dad singing his school song randomly around the house. Before I even realized what the song’s words meant, I learned the melody and would join him in the chorus! “For searching Sierra Leone far and wide, no school can well be found; That sends forth truer gentlemen, or stands on firmer ground.” Oh, such happy memories I have of him talking about his friends, his school days, and of course, his House, “Wilberforce.” I pray this Foundation lives on forever to sustain & enhance the proud legacy of The Prince of Wales School. May my dad’s precious soul continue to Rest In Perfect Peace.

Archimedes loved his family, his native land, and his Prince of Wales School passionately. He was a very proud Princewalean and Founder Trustee of the Prince of Wales School Alumni Foundation (POWSAF). Archimedes never shied away from representing his school whenever there was an opportunity to do so. He was always keen to lend a supportive ear, offer sage advice and share his knowledge of history and tradition with humor and enthusiasm. He will be remembered and missed.

From 1968 to 1972, SHA Sawyerr occupied the role of Principal of the Prince of Wales Secondary School. There was a time, in the 1970s when Pa Sawyerr (as his pupils would have referred to him) was probably the best-known Principal in Sierra Leone. Past pupils have described him as a trailblazer who set the standards that other school heads sought to emulate if their schools were to have any chance of keeping up with the high-flying “POW” of those days. He went on to serve his country as the Education Attache in the Sierra Leone High Commission in London and then on return to Freetown in 1977 as a Senior officer at the Institute of Education prior to his retirement in 1984. He passed away in December 2002, but we continue to laud his efforts to improve and sustain academic excellence at the school and for all the “truer gentlemen” he helped create.
